Brandywine Treasure

WILMINGTON, DE - - The great hotels of the world have one thing in common: a strong stamp of individuality. None can be mistaken for any other. The Hotel du Pont, shaped by 96 years as the premier hotel in Wilmington, Delaware, is a part of this grand tradition. Its convenient accessibility from major metropolitan areas of the eastern seaboard, excellent meeting facilities, and outstanding reputation for service and fine dining, and its proximity to one of America’s most historic and scenic tourism regions, the Brandywine Valley of Delaware and Pennsylvania,  have helped make it one of the most sought after hotels in the United States by business and leisure travelers alike.

The twenty-story Italian Renaissance Hotel du Pont, winner of the American Automobile Association Four-Diamond Award for 17 consecutive years, was commissioned by Pierre S. du Pont and opened in 1913, after a two-and-a-half year labor of love by French and Italian craftsmen who carved, gilded and painted it into existence. Since that time it has been owned and operated by DuPont. A few of the more famous guests during it’s illustrious history include John F. Kennedy, Eleanor Roosevelt, Charles Lindbergh, Ingrid Bergman, Joe DiMaggio and Elizabeth Taylor.

While evolving with the times – the number of guestrooms rose from 150 to 296 and then, in 1992, back to 217, for example, today’s Hotel du Pont remains a magnificent and unique reflection of its, and the nation’s, history. Resisting trends in the hotel industry to make every public room, hallway and guest room look like those in every other hotel, the Hotel du Pont is characterized by polished wood paneling, high ceilings, Queen Anne and Chippendale furnishings, and chandeliers and original art, with works by noted artists of the Brandywine Valley including Loper, McCoy, Pyle, Shoonover, and three generations of the Wyeth family.

The elegant and formal Green Room, with its musician’s gallery, Italian mosaic foyer and towering windows, has received numerous awards and is considered the only place to dine to impress a client or celebrate a special occasion. Combining the best of the new with the classics of international and regional cuisines, the Green Room features French cuisine with today’s approach towards balanced and lighter meals. Other public rooms that set the Hotel du Pont apart include the 1918 Gold Ballroom, a masterpiece in ornate, gilded beauty, and the smaller du Barry Room, with its ornate carved ceiling and crystal chandeliers, one of the most romantic settings for special events in any hotel.

Meeting facilities at the Hotel du Pont include the five handsome rooms of the Executive Conference Center, accommodating groups of up to 80, and the bright, high-tech Conference complex, where eleven rooms can accommodate groups of up to 120. The hotel also features the DuPont Theatre, a 1200-seat theatre that presents a yearly season of Broadway touring shows, dance, music and children’s theater.

While corporate and meeting guests may be most appreciative of the hotel’s facilities and high standards of service, leisure travelers enjoy an added bonus when staying at the Hotel duPont. Within an easy drive of the museums, historic homes and
gardens and the natural beauty of the Brandywine Valley, Hotel du Pont is the perfect homebase to explore the diverse cultural and artistic treasures of the region. Among the famous and unique attractions here are Winterthur Museum and Country Estate, Longwood Gardens, Hagley Museum and Library, the Delaware Art Museum, and the Brandywine River Museum.

The 217-room Hotel duPont is located in the heart of Wilmington, less than 25 minutes from Philadelphia International Airport and only minutes from Amtrak and Interstate 95. The hotel is a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts and Historic Hotels of America.
